Tips for a First Time Thrifter

Shopping at thrift stores can be a great way to find cute clothes on a budget. However, walking into a warehouse of unorganized clothes can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. I narrowed down a few tips to help out a first-time thrifter.

Call ahead and ask about deals. Thrift stores will usually have deals throughout the week or for special holidays, (the specific one I go to has a half price sale every Tuesday,) so make sure you call ahead and ask.

Make a Mood Board. Collect a few pictures of clothes you’re looking for and make a mood board before you go. You can use apps like Pinterest or just screenshot some pictures on Instagram and save an album on your phone. This can help you walk into the thrift store with an idea of what you want to buy.

Dedicate a full day. Unlike online stores, not everything is going to be organized and viewable on a window screen in front of you. Be patient when sorting through clothes (because it will take some time) and make sure you free up a few hours.

Don’t shy away from the Men’s section, especially when looking at oversized t-shirts and sweaters. You might find a vintage shirt that you could pair into a trendy outfit. Worst case, you can find (yet another) giant t-shirt to sleep in.

Men’s jeans could also be belted and worn as high-waisted jeans.
